I completed my training in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine in 1999 before spending 6 months as Adult Critical Care Fellow at the University of Toronto. In 2000 I took up a Consultant post in Antrim Area Hospital. In 2005 I moved to Halifax, NS, Canada as Assistant Professor in the Departments of Medicine (Critical Care) and Anesthesia at Dalhousie University. From 2006 until July 2010 I maintained my position in Halifax on a part-time basis while working full-time in my post at Craigavon Area Hospital. I have now moved to full-time work solely in the UK, mainly in critical (intensive) care although I also have anaesthesia duties. I am interested in infectious diseases in critical care, acute kidney injury, quality improvement, and medical education.
I have a Masters in Education and currently I am the Royal College of Anaesthetists College Tutor and Educational Supervisor for 16 trainees (residents) in Craigavon Area Hospital. I am also involved with the UK Postgraduate Medical Education and Training Board (now merged with the General Medical Council) as a partner (visitor) helping to QA education delivery.
I am interested in the role of technology in enhancing education and have authored a number of modules for the E-learning for Healthcare program in the UK (E-Learning Anaesthesia component). I also serve on the Accreditation and Online Learning Committee of the Society of Critical Care Medicine.
